Default Anyone bought/import kois from japan direct?

Hi guys,

I'm starting keeping kois as a new hobby. Saw some nice quality kois selling in japan and Their price is really cheap!!

Anyone bought or managed to get their kois without going through local koi farms?

Please share some experience.

Thanks

If the numbers are small, I suppose you can bring them in like luggage. AVA has the guidelines for this. If your numbers are big, you'd need an import license, not any import license but 1 the fish farm holds.

Importing your own will be cheaper though.

No, AVA does not permit koi to be imported in luggage despite small number.
A license is needed for koi/carps

But based on the website, it mentioned that for traveller baggage, total allowance is 30 pieces in max 3 litre of water or 60 pieces in max 6 litre of water.

So let's say I go travel in japan with my friend, based on the above, we should be able to bring back maybe 2-3 pieces of tosai in 6 litre of water right?

I'll verify with Ava on this. Will update the info here.

Bro....there are plenty of choice locally here. No need to go through the trouble to import direct.

Price may be higher here, but learn to pick good koi and groom them is more important.

Here is some of my koi. You can refer to my thread posted earlier.

these are all locally purchase.

Many other brothers had posted their collections also.

unless you are referring to very high end...then you need to buy from Japan direct.

Haha thanks for all the replies.

I guess I still got lotsa things to learn on selecting and keeping kois. I started this thread cos saw some really nice kois on some Japanese website which are way below what our local farms are selling... So was thinking of a way to import them in.

If got time would love to meet up with any sifu to learn more!!

Yep you'd need a permit, but you do not need the license for importing ornamental fish. That was TS's qn.

Anyways going direct is definitely cheaper.
