Even U-23 team can win senior competitive games. Good job at the academy and looks to churn out players for the first team.

Neil Critchley details crucial Jurgen Klopp messages and James Milner advice which inspired Liverpool win

Both Jurgen Klopp and James Milner were in full support of the young Liverpool team who put Shrewsbury Town to the sword at Anfield.

The German boss delivered several messages to Neil Critchley, the U23s boss in charge on Tuesday night for the FA Cup fourth round replay, and his young players while veteran Milner was at the stadium and inside the dressing room to lend his hand.

Critchley spoke after the 1-0 victory which saw the Reds progress into the FA Cup fifth round and set up an away tie at Chelsea about how incredible it was to have to stalwarts of the Liverpool first-team helping them on the night.

"He [Milner] was very animated behind me,” the manager said.

"He trained with us yesterday and asked if he could come along, but of course the answer was yes. It was very respectful of him to ask and then he also asked if he could come into the dressing room!

"What do you think that answer was going to be? Of course he could.

"To have someone like him who has achieved so much in the game, that's because of who he is, but he was giving words of advice to the players, he was getting right behind the players and he was vocal in the dressing room.

“As you said he was getting very animated behind me, I could hear him, and he was genuinely delighted with how the boys performed.

“I can't thank him enough for being here tonight.

“I don't think he’s ready to play yet but he was certainly jumping up and down behind me, so he’s definitely desperate to get on!”

Critchley also spoke about the words of encouragement and message Jurgen Klopp delivered to the players before and during the game.

“He [Klopp] was in touch this afternoon with words of advice and encouragement,” he said.

“We also had a message from the staff at the end there that he’s absolutely delighted with the performance and buzzing.

“We’ve given him a game against Chelsea to look forward to.

“He gives us total clarity and belief.

“He told us to play the Liverpool way and go for it because that's how the first team play.

“This is us, this is what we do, this is what we stand for, this is what we believe in and you better be ready for it.”

At the end of the game Crtichley led his young Liverpool side over to the Kop to celebrate as fans sang You’ll Never Walk Alone and chanted in jubilation.

And the manager himself looked very emotional after the final whistle went.

He added: “Because it was such a close and intense game it was such a release of emotion.

“It'll probably never happen again so I thought let's go for it. Why not.”

The thoughts of #LFC are with all those affected by the Munich air disaster.

62 years ago today, but never forgotten.

Default Liverpool Champions League squad change confirmed ahead of Atletico Madrid clash

Liverpool's squad for the Champions League knockout stages has been confirmed - with one notable change.

Takumi Minamino, the £7.25million January signing from Red Bull Salzburg, has been included in the 25-man 'A' list of players available to Jurgen Klopp for the remainder of the competition.

Minamino played against Liverpool for Salzburg, but UEFA rules state a player who appeared during the group stage is eligible to feature for another club during the latter part of the tournament.

Clubs are allowed to register up to three new 'A' list players, the deadline for which passed on Monday night.

Minamino has taken the place of Sepp van den Berg, who was included for the group stage earlier in the season.

A maximum of 25 players, two of whom must be goalkeepers, are named in the 'A' List, with a minimum of eight places reserved exclusively for 'locally trained players'.

A 'locally trained player' can either be a club-trained player on the books for three years between the ages of 15 and 21, or an association-trained player who was on the books at another club in the same association for a similar period.

Van den Berg, signed in the summer, fits into neither of these categories.

Liverpool face Atletico Madrid in the last 16, the first leg of which takes place in Spain on February 18 with the Anfield return three weeks later on March 11.

The Spaniards will be able to call upon Yannick Carrasco, who has returned to the Wanda Metropolitano on loan from Chinese side Dalian Professional.

Squad in full:
Goalkeepers: Alisson Becker, Adrian, Andy Lonergan, Caoimhin Kelleher*

Defenders: Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson, Joel Matip, Adam Lewis*, Trent Alexander-Arnold*, Neco Williams*, Yasser Larouci*

Midfielders: Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana, Xherdan Shaqiri, Curtis Jones*, Harvey Elliott

Forwards: Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi

Herbie Kane and Rhian Brewster are also on the UEFA site list, but are both currently out on loan.

(Players with a * are List B. An unlimited number of such players can be named in the squad. The UEFA website says: "A player may be registered on List B if he is born on, or after, 1 January 1998 and has been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday")
