Why would you want to lower PH since you are keeping cherries? pH 7.0 or slightly higher is fine for cherries isn't it? KTP leaves only made the water brownish. Unless you like dark or brownish water, it just doesn't seems to go. I rather have clear water so I can appreciate my shrimps better.

For me, I just redo a tank recently and used water from other tank. Risk is, if water from older tank has problem, the problem will be transfered to the newly setup tank. Using UV light helps get rid of some germs/bacterials that may not be good for shrimps.

(just noticed, there are more and more pple into UGF these days)

Prefer to have a slight low ph. With bits of ktp leaf, water wont b too brown. Yea many undergravel filter setup. Mayb my next setup I ll try ugf method. Let's see. In fact its better as it builds more bb within the ugf.
