Agree with jiahuang as usually sump is smaller by a lot cause tank maker usually made it with thinner glass for the sump.

Choices as below
1) up size sump - down part -> additional money involved n need repling too
2) use media's which is smaller n capable to cover bigger gal of water area - down part -> branded media's cost more expensive than normal egs bio home plus, marine pure or eheim sub etc
3) have more livestock - down part -> livestock don't know where to keep when taken out.
4) perform more often water change -> human energy waste
5) control feeding - down part -> fishes won't be fat enough

There is no win win but worth trying ")
