That is true. Competition between taxi drivers and private hired drivers are getting tougher and conflicts between the two parties will slowly intensify.
The taxi companies are definitely trying to find ways to stamp out Uber and GrabCar, else their companies' standing and profits will be affected. For example, taxi's rental per day could be as high as $140+, while a rental car could be as low as $60 (though need to consider the price differences between diesel and petrol).
