If we look at it from M'sia point, and the financials of this HSR, it isn't surprising the deal was shelved. To be fair, his gov inherit a huge black hole to uncover what ruins were done to their financials.

First and foremost, he needs to strengthen the financials. So it is natural to scrap or shelve the non important projects, HSR being one. He could have changed his stance for both reasons, firstly escaping the need to compensate for now, and secondly, leaving it to later gov to decide when time is right, to develop HSR.

Those lands can be better used for other developments. It was so difficult getting back Tanjong Pagar railway station and the land that rail track ran on. This HSR is as good as reallocating land to the project that we won't be able to get back easily for a long long time.

I don't think he (Dr M) is out to fix us or make things difficult. He has a lot to deal with, losing a lot of sleep. He will need time, and time is against him.

To an extend, even the King of Malaysia has accepted Dr M's party and action plans so far. He went to the extend of taking a 10% pay cut till end of his term as King. This is a good sign that the country is moving in the right path and is accepted by the King.
