yeah I think smaller bubbles are better for aeration too. It doesn't look nice though, the huge number of tiny bubbles make the water look cloudy

I only managed to keep those from shedding leaves with brighter lighting. If you want real plants you can try java fern/java moss. Those have lower lighting requirements...
