The nicest black ranchu I have seen can be bought from Sean Wee @ 96 Sungei Tengah Rd - these are from Thailand and have very prominent cheeks unlike the older versions.
But they are not cheap ....

I've never ever had to use any kit to monitor the water parameters.
All you need is to change the water regularly, observe the fish daily and feed small amounts...

shipment of small Ranchus from Nagoya which they were selling for $100+.
These were about 5cm or so and look very lively....
