I am using a underflow-overflow system from main tank to the sump. There are lots of debris (i.e. leftover fish food, detritus, dead fish :eek:) trapped between the underflow & overflow plates. Gap...

Is your tank covered? the sump compartments can be covered too, to reduce evaporation...

.... if only top up water and no WC, still need a way to keep the NO3/NO2 in check.... the plants will not eliminate the high NO3, but will at least buffer it for a while....
