I cooked my own fishes
Before I start my story, I would like to warn all hobbyist against buying 2nd hand / used tank heaters. Becos of this, all fishes in my 4ft tank were wiped out.
Live stocks : - 3 x 18" SDF full cross XB - 1 x 14" 24/7 Stable Clean 3bar IT Here it goes: Recently I bought two 300W tank heaters to standby for my tank. Never used heaters in my entire time of fish keeping. Have always read in forum bout setting heaters to 30 or 32 degrees together with medication will heal fishes with certain sickness effectively. Therefore decided to buy n standby. Soon after, due to some coincident, I have traded for n taken over a piece of very nice 3bar clean IT with a bro. However this IT has swollen eyes on one side fully clouded. Started with only mild salt n yellow powder treatment, the improvement is not significant after 1 week. I decided to try the heater together with epson salt. This morning, I put in the heater, set to 30degrees, put in 500g of Petfran Epsom salt n left home for work. When I reached home, I noticed all my fishes inside were floating lifelessly. First thing that came to my mind was to feel the tank. As to my expectation, the tank felt hot. I quickly climb over n put my hand into the water. Indeed the water was hot. This concludes tat the heater was spoilt n heats up to a temperature that eventually killed my fishes. I cooked my own fishes for the first time!!! Look at how they are swimming before it all happens.

May ur fishes rip bro
|
Feel ur pain bro...happened to me once also.
Got my brand new "atas" brand heater from LFS somemore.......... Discus was all floating when I came back from work...almost made me quit fish keeping... |
Oh no. My sincere condolence.
|
If you have a need to use heater.
No matter how atas the brand, never ever rely on the builtin thermostat. Always have a separate in-water thermometer to measure and set your heater accordingly. |
This morning, I put in the heater, set to 30degrees, put in 500g of Petfran Epsom salt n left home for work.
Shouldn't it be 500g aquarium salt  |
Rip. last week I set my heater to 30• to Cure white spot and next day it hit 35. Two of my l201 got burn. And I quickly off it. Thanks God mine didn't die. I dare not use heater anymore.
|
I have my fair share of defective heater, now only use it when i am around.
|
deepest condolence... feel your heart ache...
btw, I think to set heater to 30 degrees, might as well add one or 2 more tubes of light on top... my 2 feet planted tank without fan or chiller temperature is about 30 to 31 degrees. with 2 55W pl light shining on top. |
Sibeh heartpain... Just imagine how much heat was needed to make the 422 hot. And how they suffered into their death...:(:(:(
Really dishonest seller!!! :mad::mad::mad: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8390/8...83fb5ec4c0.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8126/8...001c61aac8.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8380/8...26cdc8b787.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8266/8...7a666542_z.jpg |
Take this as a lesson bro. I usually try out my heaters when i'm home the whole day and can monitor how the water heats up. I do this for new and old heaters that i have. Some of my heaters are close to 10 yrs old and have not been used for 2-4 yrs.
I feel your loss bro, innocent lives are lost. RIP. |
Sorry to hear this terrible news. My deepest condolences...

Did u check with the seller whether the heater got the auto themosat function which enable the heater to switch 'off' once required temp reach, followed by "on" agn once temp drop lower than your required? |

No way to chk for the faulty auto themosat function, only seller know the best unless like what senior bros suggested, test it before use which i believe nobody will including me. Take it as a painful lesson learnt, move on ba. My deepest condolences bro. |

Also not sure on this, mayb some experience bros can advice? In most cases heater should have this function, what i meant, based on outlook and testing, heater might be working however the function "auto thermosat" might b faulty which end user wont realize till thing happen. |
All heater should have a thermostat... To cutoff the heating coil when it reach to the require temperature.
I doubt the seller will compensate ya. Bro my advice is don't need to chase the seller we have to move on. |
Sorry for your loss ts. Next time check the heater first, there's a light indicator on heater. Light on meant heater turn on, light off heater is off. Make sure the heater can auto toggle between on n off before using it. I usually take a small container, set to close water temp, drop the heater n wait for a while to check can it auto shut off when preset temp reached.

hi bro.
what brand is your heater. some heater need to be calibrated before use. different country different standard. My Jager Eheim 300W. says pre calibrated. i put into water. set at 28. water actually is 31. luckily didnt set at 31. else i dont know how now. there are a few dials on the top there to calibrate. so really need to take note these small small things. RIP you fishies. Condolences |
bro, my deepest condolences for your loss.
yes, "heart pain" honest, whenever I use the heater in my tank, I shall make sure there is full aeration too just in case. test it for the entire day when I am around too. |
Thanks for all.
First time use heater, dunno wat to look out for... Will be my first and last :( |
Will take note now when using heater....
Did you try use the heater again to see whether it's auto cut off? I always monitor the ON/Off light before leaving it. May your fishes RIP |
My condolences to you bro...
For me, when ever I buy a used heater, I will put it in a pail of water to test the accuracy of the heater before I actually use it in my tank. Have heard too many horror stories of faulty heaters. Usually working heaters may go off +- 1 to 2 degrees C. By doing this test, can adjust to your desired temperature by correcting the differences. ;) |
my deepest condolences to you.. i tink this type difficult to prevent also.. it might be working well for 1 day and go hywire the 2nd day.. we have to either monitor closely and take a risk.. actually in sgp, if it glass tank in HDB, there is actually no need for heater.. water shld be ard 29degrees
|
My condolences to you bro. Had a near brush with my old heater too. Was lucky i got home in time, else it would have been aro soup. :(
