I have been having lengthy discussions with my wife about upgrading to a bigger tank for quite some time now.
Now that we have moved to our new house, there is space for a ten footer in the living room... but I do not know if it is the right decision. How long can a tank of that dimension last? Will the cabinet withstand the weight for years & years to come? Would it be better to have a steel stand instead?

place your tank on the floor.
The structure of your stand is very important and that goes down to the person's knowledge and integrity of not cutting corners during the process....
its alot easier to do maintenance on the floor too.
I know its not that shiok to put it on the floor but for me, its a trade off for getting a bigger tank.
I had the same concern for about a year and eventually settled for a floor tank (Fgt with glass panel).
and frankly speaking, nothing last forever, it will come to a point whereby you'll need to change a new tank after few years, having a floor tank makes it alot easier to do the logistics (for my case).
Big project needs more planning but its very satisfying upon completion.

Very helpful insights Bro. Will ponder & weigh the pros & cons very carefully before making that big step.. don't want to regret in future (huge tanks not easy to dispose when the time eventually comes)..

how about 10' by 4' wide by 2.5' depth.
Volume wise, its about 10% more than the 10.3.3.
But I'll imagine your arowanas would appreciate the extra width than depth.

On your initial query - that size can easily house up to 15 or so adult aros.
My 7 x 2.5 x 2.5 housed 7 aros reasonably comfortable.

If I may say, unless you have natural light source, artificial tanning for reds is going to be challenging with a depth of 2.5 ft. Understandably, any lower would make the tank look a bit slender/long.

Suggest if you intend to have the tank in the living room got to be presentable so that when you have guest you don't feel akward. Since you going to have it in a new house, do have a good space planing taking into consideration all the furniture and things you going to have in the living before you decide the size of your tank. Of course for aro is 'as big as possible' do consider the foot print, maintenance and disturbance that will cause to yourself and family. Disposal is secondary as once having a tank you never look beyound (do you plan for giving up the hobby?). A good manufacturer of tank can easily last for 10 yrs or more. Do go for a reputated one and don't stinge on budget.

I think for a big tank like what you are thinking of, is the flooring able to accommodate? If you are staying in non landed property, you might want to think twice as the weight of the big 10ft tank is humongous. 2nd, no matter how good your media is, you still need to do wc. Should you have devided to get the tank of 10ft long, then you might want to consider installing pipings to your toilet to do wc, but of course your oc needs to approve it.
