DIY DI Unit by Sealife
Recommended by one of the reefers here a few months back... can't remember his nick.. if you know who you are... own up :p
Anyway, have been using this DI unit for all my top-up water for the past few days and the diatoms miraculously disappeared. Used to have to use the magnetic cleaner to clean the glass every 2 days as the whole glass is covered with diatoms. But since using DI water for top-up since Saturday, very little/no diatoms observed on the glass. Will monitor the situation and update this thread in a few weeks time. Cost: $75 Replacement cartridge: $50 including installation Lifespan: 1300l Overall, if this DI unit really does its job well... I think its actually quite a worthwhile investment. Lets see if my green hair algae will go away in a few months time ;) |
Oh please show us/me a pic of what U talking abt .. me always can't get term/name correct .. :P .. thanks ..
di is using resin right? |
$75 is a good investment ....
Pic please so that we can see it .... |
too bad... camera spoil.. can't take a picture :(
Its actually a PVC pipe with the resin inside... the water will run into the pipe and out from the other end... a simple DIY product. |
Can't visualize leh ....
Does it operates like a FR but with resin in? |
i have it...been using it since day one...want me to take a pic?? :p :p
|
Decentkid ...... pls post a pic.

That means still need a small pump to feed this unit ....
So the replaceable cartridge is the long pvc hosing or the two red ends? |

Just return the pipe to sealife and he will replace a new one for u.... which means he either has one standby in the store or u return the next day to collect it... |
That's cool.
Are there any indications to alert you that it needs to replace? If not, how do you know. |

Agar agar not so good unless you test the water using a TDS water quality meter ...

Hi Ken,
Why dun you try TWP? I using that for long time. US product. I think is US. Pharm. Got it from Petmart yrs back. BOught at $68 or $75. Refill Cart abt $35. Till I get back my cam, I post the pic also. The thing will turn purple when it is exhausted. Cheers! Goh :) Selling at Quote:

I used for a yr, so far so good. I change a pail of water bi-weekly and cart lasted for almost 1/2 yr before it get exhausted. The setback is the water flow fm tap to DI need to be slow/low pressure....always forgotten to switch off the tap.

Jireh selling this at :
Usual price $200 , now offer $180 Replacement Cartridge = $60 here You sure can get it at your price? If it works and at your price... maybe its more worth it. How much water can eahc cartridge process? |
I don't think it costs that much....I bought fm petmart too. Saw Aqua Star selling almost same price like petmart. It does helps to provide "cleaner" water.
|
wah confirm bo? looks good to have 1.
|
less than $100 can get one, some FW shops selling too.
Ard 6 mth ago I asked a FW shop near Petmart (at the playground), they were selling $90. |
Goh .. thanks for the tip as I almost place an order for Water General Mfg Co 6 stage RO+DI from Filter Direct at ebay for US$115 excluding shipping of US$80. This works out to be approx S$320.
Total cost of the TWP is about $110 then it is a good buy! Since the TWP is a proven by Goh & Sotong Ball then will get one from PetMart tomoro as they are closed today. Also thanks to Sotong Ball for the tip ie having a slow n steady low flowrate from the tap. ;) |
After another incident.... now I really don't trust Jireh..
Anyway... so the TWP can last for abt 1000l as well? |
Any other LFS in the west sells it? FW lfs?
|
how many litres it can support?
any URL to read this prodt up? anyone used ant TDS meter to test the actual volume span of the device? |
NOt sure, but many had been using it for a long time. DO a search on Reefs.org or RC, still have alot of comment. but very old thread i think.
Cheers! |
This TWP thing generate DI water izzit?? Or just purified the water? Thanks
|
to all bros
actually this cartridge filter is pretty similar to those used for the water coolers. except that the water coolers type is more expensive.
the price comes with the membrane used. In fact it is common to use the TFC (thin film composite) to filter tap water before intro to tank. What Goh had intro is a gd pdt i suppose. i will find out more abt that later. |
I think I come across at C328 too.. ;) ..I thought it meant for FW :p
|
Tap Water Filter able to treat approx 200 - 300L only fm my experience. Cost wise in term of amt of water treated, i think RO+DI is more economical, last longer and able to remove almost 100% of impurities and dissolved solid compare to DI only. The setback on RO+DI is huge amt of waste water generated and unable to know when has it exhausted (might release minerals back to water if continue to use). I am thinking of adding only 1 stage of RO(membrane only) to increase the lifespan of DI but waste water is my concern.
|
1 can pay more to run 2 unit in series. last time read that the americans got good results in running 2.
media exhaust more uniformly |

wat u mean by 1 stage? |
Think you can diy the filter also, read from a diy website, you only need carbon, rowa & poly filter, just let the tap water flow thru it.
BTW, i am using (years ago, bought for my aro at the beginning) the tap water filter mentioned by bro Goh, so far so good. |
think hor I MUST go source some Lab grade resin liao ..
this one sound correct? :p Strong base resins are highly ionized and can be used over the entire pH range. These resins are used in the hydroxide (OH) form for water deionization. They will react with anions in solution and can convert an acid solution to pure water. |
Yup, trying to source the resin too. If found, gonna make one using clear PVC & GF piping for fun.
So Monster, find it & u got cheap DIY DI unit. Ken, Ekia u want? Call Monster faster find. haha. |
