I think the most important is to understand the cycling process and not to rush it through. This is one of the most important steps in the hobby and need to be done correctly and not rushed through.

On a side note, do note that while they are very hardy and excellent beginner fish, damsels can also get aggressive. This would make introducing new fish difficult.

Yes, pH is maintained at around that range. Aim for around 8.3, 8 is on the low side already.
